RUSSEL MCLYN

I was born in New Orleans, LA, however early in life; we lived all over, since my Father was a career soldier. Of all the places I lived, I hold “SACRED” the PHILIPPINES and TAIWAN and those savory memories of my youth.

As a teen I developed a serious interest in music, which led me to high school where I blossomed, as a Clarinet and Alto Saxophonist. After high school I received a full music scholarship to attend the University of Arkansas AM & N, where as a college musician I performed in all types of bands. I was selected to play in the New York City Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Halftime Football Show.

As a young soloist I played with the LEGENDARY DONALD BRYD and played for Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, I also played for the singing group The SYLVERS. However I must admit my personal highlights as a MUSICIAN at such a young age was performing in Lagos, Nigeria at “FASTAC 77” with the renowned “FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI” Band.

While performing as a young MUSICIAN, I developed an interest in photography which stimulated my interest in Multi-media Arts. This led to me attending California State University of Long Beach, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Radio/TV and Film. While working simultaneously as a free lance PHOTOGRAHER I have had works PUBLISHED in several “PERIODICALS” for Paramount Pictures, “Travel & Arts” and the “Beach Boys Newsletter”.

Once I graduated from Cal State Long Beach I worked as a film intern at 20th Century Fox. This afforded me the opportunity to study all the facets of Film Production. After I completed my internship, I joined ABC 7, local news in Los Angeles, in OCTOBER 1980, as a Film Apprentice/ENG News Cameraman.

Throughout my years in this business I have shot numerous Documentaries, Special Events and Entertainment reports. In doing so I received a “GREATER LOS ANGELES PRESS CLUB, JOUNALISM AWARD for EXCELLANCE” and a “GOLDEN MIKE AWARD”. These Awards were received by me for my INDIVIDUAL LIVE COVERAGE of the “MAYDAY RIOTS”. Additionally, in 2003 received an honorable mention ”CARPEDEIM” for “seizing the moment” and bringing both the faces of the Veterans and the Emotional reactions of the people touching FACELESS names of Loved Ones to the public. I capture such “unrehearsed” actions, such as a woman holding an AMERICAN flag in her hand whilst touching the name of someone she lost. Her face filled with expressions of grief, sorrow and HEALING left me BEATHLESS.

I’ve been BLESSED to witness and cherish these and so many other moving stories that I can’t even describe them with words.

So being HONORED for “30 years of PHOTO JOUNALISM” with one network, ABC 7, LOS ANGELES, I am both HONORED and GRATEFUL. .
