Born and
raised in Los Angeles, Rene
Vasquez attended
Art Center College of Design and
has had exhibits in L.A.,
Arizona, Miami and New York.
He currently lives and works in Sherman Oaks,
Ca..
He
obsessively
paints the inner and fetishized
journeys of manhood, mostly
folly, attempting to gain
understanding and position as a
man in relationship to his
woman, child, family and place
in an overly and intrusive,
societal insistence on the
feminization of men. It is a
mostly base occupation.
Process:
Birch Panels are cut and sanded
then water soaked and left to
dry. Sanded again. Generally an
acrylic wash is used to stain
the wood. Prisma color pencils,
graphite and acrylic paint are
used and a final layer of
varathane semi-gloss varnish is
applied. The varnish acts not
only as a protective element but
is essential to bring out the
grain of the wood and also to
intensify the color of the
pigment and to increase
transparency. Rarely is there a
plan for the piece, all images
are linked intuitively, one to
the other. He uses no reference
materials.
